Creedence Clearwater Revival – Jam Session with Booker T. Jones at Fantasy Studio

(Angelo Maggioni – 17 giugno 2020)

(English version)

In our rundown among the unofficial Creedence records, this recording made in the Fantasy studios on January 30, 1970 certainly deserves a prominent place (although some sources give the recording for July 30, 1970). Important because it finally gives you the opportunity to listen to alternate versions of some pieces of the Californian quartet; in fact all the other bootlegs of the group are related to live concert recordings.
Recall that John Fogerty was – and still is – a manic perfectionist, and everything that did not end on record was destroyed immediately.
In this recording in the Fantasy studios, Creedence are in the company of their great friend, Booker T. Jones, with whom they had already performed numerous performances on various tours in the United States, and with whom they will share the stage the following evening in the famous concert of the Oakland Coliseum
Booker T. & the M.G. it was an already “veteran” band, with half a dozen albums released and several hit songs.
Returning to the disc in question, the most interesting part is undoubtedly the remake of the original Creedence songs, where Booker T.’s keyboards fit perfectly into the sound fabric of the songs, differentiating them substantially from the original versions.
Track 8 “I Put Spell on You” has nothing to do with the original song published on the first Creedence album, it seems much more improvisation like the other Jam
The other two tracks placed at the beginning and at the end of the disc are simple blues jam of instrumental grooves, but without particular riffs that can attract the attention of the listener, and that in the long run (the songs are quite long) also become boring .
The recording then suffers from repeated electronic beeps for the duration of the disc
A curiosity: the disc in question had already been published (in a reduced version) on vinyl in 1980 by the CCR Fan Club but with a recording quality to say the least… unlistenable.
